Workstations and applications
A working environment for interpretation and modelling, with specialist applications, installation and licensing managed together.
Tailwind held a UK North Sea portfolio with 41.8 million barrels of oil equivalent in net proved and probable reserves at 1 January 2022.
Starting in 2017 with 6 users and 4 key applications, Virtu built an on-premises environment for Tailwind Energy. It grew to 15 users and approximately 15 applications just before Tailwind was acquired.
Back to Our Work
TAILWIND ENERGY / SINCE 2017Tailwind needed a technology environment built around the work of its geoscientists and engineers. The system initially supported 6 users and 4 key applications, bringing specialist applications, technical data and simulation workloads together.
Virtu’s role was to bring those requirements together in one working environment, with the capacity to develop alongside the business.
We built an on-premises platform that brought together workstations, applications, data, compute, licensing and support. Tailwind selected this approach over established private-cloud alternatives.
The application estate included Petrel, tNavigator, REP5 and Eclipse. Our work connected the applications to the infrastructure and day-to-day support needed to run them.

Compute capacity to support reservoir simulation alongside the team’s desktop workflows.
Data formed part of the platform design, connecting the team’s applications and computing resources to the information they worked with.
Virtu supported the environment as well as building it, retaining knowledge of how its applications and infrastructure worked together.
The initial build was the beginning of an ongoing relationship. As Tailwind grew, we scaled the environment from 6 users and 4 key applications to 15 users and approximately 15 applications just before the acquisition.
The system supported both internal and external users, with capacity expanding alongside user growth.
Working across applications, data and infrastructure gave us continuity between the original design and the decisions that followed. The platform evolved as a connected environment, with Virtu responsible for its ongoing operation and support.
The Tailwind system had 99.999% planned uptime, supporting the working environment as its users and application estate grew.
No security incidents were reported during the Tailwind engagement. The environment supported access for both internal and external users.
When Serica acquired Tailwind, the environment provided the foundation for bringing the two companies’ subsurface teams and technology together.
That later chapter expanded the platform beyond its original Tailwind scope. Today, the Serica subsurface environment supports 40+ users and around 30 specialist applications.
The platform we first developed at Tailwind is now known as Onyx. Its foundation is the same principle: bring the technology and support together around the work subsurface teams need to deliver.
