ONYX | SPECIALIST MANAGED SUBSURFACE PLATFORM

Your subsurface infrastructure. Our ongoing responsibility.

Onyx is Virtu's managed solution for customer-owned private subsurface environments. It brings together specialist workstations, applications, licensing, compute, data, secure access and expert support — with Virtu responsible for implementing and continually operating the agreed service.

A clear ownership and service model.

You own the hardware

The infrastructure is your investment and remains your asset. We design it around your applications, users and workloads, with independent advice on the equipment you need.

Virtu runs the environment

We implement the platform and provide its continuing operation, maintenance and user support. Onyx is available only with Virtu’s ongoing managed service.

Our revenue comes from implementing and managing your environment. We earn no margin on your hardware investment.

Keeping users productive every day.

A working server is only part of the picture. Your people need responsive applications, reliable connectivity, available licences and fast access to their data.

Maximise user uptime

We manage maintenance, dependencies and support around keeping your team working, reducing unplanned disruption and helping users get back to work when issues occur.

Keep systems responsive

We manage compute, storage, workstations and access around real subsurface workloads, addressing the bottlenecks that slow interpretation, modelling and simulation.

Take ownership of issues

Your users reach specialists who understand their environment and coordinate across applications, infrastructure and suppliers to resolve problems.

Maintain continuity through change

We plan upgrades, migrations and capacity changes around the team’s work, and adapt the environment as users, datasets and application needs grow.

One service across the working environment.

We agree the scope and service levels with you and your existing IT team. Onyx brings ongoing management and specialist support together across:

Workstations
Applications & licences
Technical data
GPU & compute
Secure remote access
User support

Access controls, backup, recovery and maintenance are planned around your environment and responsibilities. Availability targets, support coverage and recovery requirements are agreed for your service.

Specialists in the applications your team uses.

Virtu supports environments incorporating Petrel, Eclipse, INTERSECT, tNavigator, Petex, ArcGIS, RokDoc, REP5, PaleoScan and other technical applications. We manage the infrastructure and application dependencies that affect everyday performance.

Our experience began with Tailwind in 2017 and continued through Serica’s growth and acquisition integrations, supporting around 30 specialist applications.

Start with the business case.

We work with you to identify savings, improve productivity and define the service your people need. Together, we compare your current costs with the hardware investment, transition and ongoing Onyx service, and agree how the benefits will be measured.

How we assess the investment

Moving from SLB Delfi to on-premises?

Virtu brings the whole move together: a business case, application assessment against your Petrel workflows, infrastructure implementation, data migration and tailored training. Once you are live, Onyx provides ongoing management and specialist user support for the complete agreed environment.

Shared licences. Sized around actual demand.

Onyx can support floating or concurrent application licences, where the software vendor permits them. Authorised users draw from a shared pool of licences, so you can size eligible application capacity around how many people need to use it at the same time, rather than buying a dedicated licence for every team member.

For example, five concurrent licences could serve a larger authorised team, with no more than five permitted simultaneous uses of the licensed application or features. Module requirements and vendor restrictions still apply; users keep their own accounts.

Application licensing is separate from the Onyx managed service. We review entitlements, usage and peak demand with you to identify potential savings without leaving users waiting for access.

Common questions

Is Onyx a cloud service owned by Virtu?

No. You fund and own the hardware. Virtu implements and runs your environment under an ongoing managed service agreement; we do not resell capacity from a cloud that Virtu owns.

What do we pay Virtu for?

Implementation and the recurring service to operate, maintain and support your environment and users. Hardware is your separate investment, and Virtu earns no margin on it. Scope, service levels and commercial terms are agreed with you.

Can another provider support Onyx after implementation?

Onyx is delivered with continuing Virtu management. We implement the environment as part of the ongoing service, rather than as a standalone build for another provider to support.

Where does our hardware run?

We agree its location and hosting arrangements around your performance, security and operational needs, including premises or a suitable data centre. You retain ownership of the hardware.

Will it work with our existing IT and licences?

We work alongside your IT team and suppliers, review existing systems and application entitlements, and agree responsibilities for access, security, licensing and support.

How do we move across?

We map users, applications, data and dependencies, then implement and test a phased transition. Virtu continues to operate and support the environment after users move across.

How does AI fit into Onyx?

AI search, support assistance and operational automation are areas of development. Any available capabilities and controls are agreed with you; they are not standard features of every service.
